Ah Who Run Dis

Exhibition by Krystle Lemonias

On view Saturday Nov. 9th 2024 – Sunday Dec. 8th 2024

(Guttenberg, NJ) – Guttenberg Arts is pleased to announce “Ah Who Run Dis”, a compelling solo exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Krystle Lemonias, on view from November 9 through December 8, 2024. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 9, from 7 PM to 9PM. RSVP at guttenbergarts.org.

Lemonias’ work explores personal and political intersections of power through the lens of immigration, highlighting how individuals from colonized nations navigate resilience amid exploitative societal structures. In “Ah Who Run Dis,” the artist presents an evocative collection of fiber works, prints, and sculptures, inviting viewers to consider the nuances of access, privilege, and resilience when confronting established power dynamics. Each piece reflects the layered challenges and triumphs of individuals who find ways to survive and advance within a system that often resists them.

Krystle Lemonias (Jamaican, b. 1989) is a visual artist, labor activist, and art educator, whose work addresses issues of social class, labor rights, and economic inequality, particularly within Black communities. Her pieces have been featured in notable exhibitions, including Yu cyaan ketch Quaku, yu ketch im shut at Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Show Me the Signs at Blum and Poe for the #sayhername campaign, and Unblocked: Improvisation and Identity in Contemporary Quilts at Hunterdon Art Museum. Lemonias employs found materials, fabric, and iconography that probe the complexities of Black immigrant cultural identity and its ties to the broader diaspora.

With a BFA in printmaking from New Jersey City University and an MFA from the University of South Florida, Lemonias is currently Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Art at Rowan University. Her work portrays Black individuals, particularly those in essential but often overlooked labor roles, as multifaceted individuals with agency and resilience. Using materials like repurposed baby clothes from her family and the families they have cared for, Lemonias creates a powerful dialogue on the intersection of care work, social identity, and systemic power structures.
