Discover the magic of surface design in clay with artist Andrew Robinson in this hands-on workshop focused on underglaze printing and transfers. Held at Guttenberg Arts, this one-day intensive introduces participants to the use of silkscreen sugar lift techniques and custom underglaze decals—designed specifically for greenware and leather-hard clay.
We’ll cover:
• Mixing and printing with underglaze silkscreen sugar inks
• Creating and using rice paper transfers
• Applying images to soft clay and leather-hard surfaces
• Tips and tricks for clean, expressive results
You’ll print on paper, experiment with layering, and learn how to integrate image-making into your ceramic practice. Perfect for artists, designers, and anyone interested in clay and printmaking techniques.
Andrew Robinson is an artist and educator with a longstanding ceramics practice rooted in painterly and print-based surface techniques on clay. With a background in both fine art and craft, his work explores the expressive potential of image, pattern, and form through hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics. He has exhibited widely and held residencies at institutions including Greenwich House Pottery, Guttenberg Arts, Peters Valley School of Craft, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, and 92nd Street Y. A dedicated educator, Andrew has taught at Parsons School of Design and worked internationally on craft and design initiatives in India, Haiti, and the UK through partnerships with the British Crafts Council and other cultural organizations.
